a bjd advent – dec 7 sledding
as a light snow fell meg took eilidh and crystal sledding
crystal brought her own sled
turns out she needs a lot more practice ! 🙂
an advent wreath.. er log
the kids are getting very excited for christmas so meg has planned 24 days worth of activities to help them wait. tomorrow is the start of advent so she needed to make an advent wreath so the girls could light the candles (no the boys will not be allowed to help, honestly would any sane person let noah or emrys anywhere NEAR fire?)
i know it supposed to be a circular wreath, but she decided a birch log would make a cool option so here goes…
first lay the candles out to decide how long the log should be
before cutting the log i put a couple of rows of hot glue on the bottom and then squished it flat on my silicone sheet, this made it a bit more stable and less likely to roll. i could have cut a piece off the bottom to make it flat instead, but this was easier.
here are the dimensions we used
i marked the candle positions with a tiny x, then drilled the holes using progressively bigger drill bits til the hole fit. working up that way helps keep the birch bark from shattering or the log from splitting. the final size for these (birthday) candles was a 7/32 drill bit.
as you can see the candle rolled on me in spite of the hot glue, and the last hole is a bit wonky, but it doesn’t show if i photograph straight on
here it is with the candles. we couldn’t find the traditional purple and pink, so went with white and silver instead, because it looks nice 😉
next i needed to decorate it
tiny red berries from a potpourri mix, and greenery pulled of a dollar store wreath
new chairs!
cricket and i found a bunch of new chairs in the christmas decoration aisles this year.
the two wooden ones (cricket is sitting on one identical to the chair to her right), and the cream molded one were from london drugs, the red adirondack chair is from chapters they will be great for my realfees, pukifees, and other similar 6-8″ dolls
cricket and the christmas lights
cricket posed by the tree to wish you all a merry christmas
then she discovered the fairy lights!
wishing you all a christmas filled with magic and wonder
vacation pictures.
i’m finally getting around to posting my vacation pictures from the summer. cricket, meg and eilidh went with us to the yukon and alaska for 10 days. we had a wonderful time! the scenery is gorgeous and the weather was nice and cool. we missed the heat wave back home for which we were all thankful. we got back to cooler weather and the next week the yukon got their heat wave, so perfect timing on our part. we did a bit of hiking and a lot of exploring. here are some of my favorite pictures of cricket (wearing her new sweater and hat)
we landed in whitehorse then drove down to skagway
we were driving along through the mountains then suddenly saw sand on the side of the road. when we pulled over there was this amazing stretch of sand dunes which we explored for a couple of hours before driving on.
carcross desert yukon is apparently the world’s smallest desert. but cricket thought it was the perfect size.
exploring the beautiful grounds of the cabins where we stayed in skagway, right near the base of the chilkoot trail. we went on a 2 hour hike up the trail, which was fun. my health isn’t good enough to actually hike the whole thing (apparently a 4-6 day hike!)
we also took the train up the whitehorse pass. part of the historic goldrush trail
cricket was fascinated and stared out the window the whole way.
after a couple of days we took the ferry across to haines. we managed to do a couple of hikes there as well
washtub
in my pre-purge days i had amassed quite a collection of sample cups – you know the ones that costco, or the groceries stores used to pass out samples of food items they want you to try? anyway every time i got a sample, if the food in it wasn’t too sticky, once iI ate the food, i would stick it in my purse or pocket instead of the garbage. at home i would wash it out and add it to my ever growing pile. One time i really scored and the lady passing out samples accidently knocked a stack onto the floor while we were there. she explained that she couldn’t use them for food anymore (obviously) and would just have to throw them out, if we had any use for them, we were welcome to them, of course i snagged them all!
anyway i use the for all sorts of things, like mixing paint colors or holding small amounts of glue when crafting. i reuse them as much as possible and then throw them out when they get too covered with stuff or crack, as they eventually do. as i was looking for something to turn into a washtub, my eyes lit on the stack of sample cups and i knew that some of them would be perfect.
this is just a few of the ones i have at the moment. you can see they are all well used.
while i was making my washboard i coated the cups with off white primer. i have a good can of spray that will stick pretty much anything – wood, metal, plastic etc. i use that as my base coat so my acrylic paints will stick and not just drip or peel off.
next i sprayed on a coat of stainless silver to get the right base color…. and disaster!
even though they were both the same kind and brand of paint. the paint peeled and buckled when i put on the first coat. so back to the drawing board.
of course this washtub fits the bigger of my two washboards, so i had to find something else for my realpuki’s anyway. as luck would have it, i was putting in an order for new saw blades at stockade wood supplies, and they had a miniature tub available, and it was smaller than any of the ones i had seen. i thought it might be the perfect size so added it to my order.
turns out it was perfect. since it was already silver i just needed to make it look worn.
to age it, i brushed on random streaks and dabs of black and white and grays. as usual i put a bit of each color on my palette, and used a toothpick to swirl it together in the middle. this gives me black, white, and a near infinite variety of grays. i looked at several pictures of old galvanized tins and buckets from the internet, as i worked, so i could see what i was aiming for, and make sure it looked realistic.
After that paint dried, for the final touch, i added some rusty brown wood stain in the creases, and around the handles -places where rust was most likely to form. the stain is more transparent than the paint, so works better for light rusting than the thicker acrylic would.
realfee houndstooth dress
i saw a picture of a black and white herringbone knit blanket with a red ruffle and it instantly inspired me to make a dress using the same colorway. i decided to do the bodice and sleeves in solid red since the increases in the houndstooth would look kind of “smooshy” and then do the skirt the plaid and add a narrow band of paid near the cuffs to tie it together. doing the ruffle on the skirt the same as the neck/sleeve ruffles caused the skirt to curl too much so i ripped it out and did a mock pleat using a 3×2 rib instead…. much better!
the bodice and sleeves are knit on 1.5mm needles. i switched to 1.75 mm when i started the houndstooth skirt, to add fullness and counteract the natural tightness of the slip stitch pattern.
i had all 24 ends sewn in and the sleeve seam sewn, when i suddenly decided i didn’t like the cuffs after all.. too floofy! so i carefully cut the right one off and re-knit it in the round, since i didn’t want to even try and unstitch that whole seam without wrecking it. now i like it much better. i will be doing the same to the second sleeve.
and here it is with both cuffs re-done. the pile of yarn at the top is all the bits of cut off/unravelled yarn from the original cuffs.
all part of the process
i decided to knit my realfees some striped sweaters, and crochet coordinating funky hats. i wanted something that would be more suitable for the boys, or at least unisex. i tried, as much as possible, to carry the ends along so i’d have less to sew in, but i still ended up with this!
after sewing in all the ends i ended up with a pile of yarn bits almost as big as the pile of sweaters/hats
i still have to add snaps and make some pants to go with them so my dolls aren’t indecently exposed 😉 but then i’ll take more pictures and eventually one of each color will end up in my etsy store.
